How to litter box-train your bunny?

Many are surprised to know that Nugget + Tutu are litter box-trained.

Here are some successful tips & tricks we used to train a free-roaming house bunny:

  1. When your bunny arrives home, keep them confined to a reasonable smaller space for the first few weeks (ie one room). Let them freely roam in that space. They will likely choose one spot/corner where they pee/poop. From there, wipe down the area with paper towels and spray with vinegar. Then, set up their litter box in that area and toss the napkin in the litter box. This will remind them this is where they should pee/poop. Repeat this a few times until you are confident they can do this on their own (Cons: there will be pee on their feet for a few weeks/months depending on how long the training takes, but it will eventually go away when they are litter-trained.)

  2. When there are accidents, do not let the accidents "sit." Wipe the pee or collect the poop, and put them back in the litter box. Clean the area with water and vinegar to discard the smell.

  3. Watch for their behaviors. Bunnies will lift their tail slightly when they are peeing, so when that happens, nudge them to go back onto their toilet.
